Gasworks Art Park Upgrade

What the client needed

The City of Port Phillip needed a full landscape upgrade of Gasworks Art Park in Albert Park. The former industrial site required careful handling due to soil contamination from its century of operation as a gas foundry. Council wanted improved pathways, new planting, upgraded amenities, and better lighting across the park while preserving its heritage character.

Contaminated soil from a century of gas manufacturing sat beneath most of the site. Every excavation required testing, classification, and licensed disposal. Work was staged across two phases to keep portions of the park accessible to the public throughout construction, and existing heritage structures had to be protected during earthworks.

What we delivered

Extensive electrical, irrigation, earthworks, and drainage works improved the site’s functionality across both stages. Over 300 trees and 3,000 plants were installed in new and existing garden beds. New surfaces include concrete pathways, exposed aggregate paths, compacted gravel, and turf. Community amenities including BBQs, seating, picnic settings, drinking fountains, bike hoops, shade umbrellas, and bin enclosures were installed throughout. A new soft-fall rubber surface was laid beneath the newly added swing set, and new signage and lighting completed the upgrade.
